Jan Kollwitz, the great-grandson of prominent Modern graphic artist Kathё Kollwitz, is a Japanese-trained German potter. In the 1980s, Kollwitz trained in pottery first in Germany, then abroad in Echizen, Japan, with potter Yutaka Nakamura. In 1988, Kollwitz set up his studio in Cismar, Germany, and had a wood-fired anagama kiln constructed by Tatsuo Watanabe. Kollwitz's works are placed in the kiln completely unglazed, marked by flame, fly ash and smoke.
