Blum's compositions present us a delightful panoply of characters. They belong to no age and to every age. They are both fanciful anachronisms and universals in the the comédie humaine. The theme which seems to pervade all of Blum's works is that of human inventiveness gone awry. It is artifice itself that turns the point of Blum's satiric thrusts. Though his characters express the timelessness of human folly, they never become more than stylization of the artist's rhythmic, cursive line.
