In his search for true Mingei pottery, the Japanese philosopher Soetsu Yanagi discovered the community of Onda Sarayama on the island of Kyushu in Japan. Onda Sarayama (Japanese for "Plate Mountain") was founded as a potting community in 1705. Little has changed about the process and aesthetics of ceramic production in Onda since that time. Currently, ten of the fourteen families inhabiting the area participate in pottery production; the eldest son is the only person who can throw the pottery, the clay is dug from nearby sources, a water powered clay pounder still operates twenty-four hours a day, glazes are made from local materials, and all pieces are still fired in a noborigama (climbing kiln). This community of potter-families works together to create traditional, iron rich, stoneware functional pieces. There is a strong focus on slip decoration via brushwork, chattering and dripping with a free and energetic approach.

Works from this community of potters have recently been accepted into the Duxbury Art Complex (Massachusetts) and the Sackler Museum at Harvard (Massachusetts).

The Gallery recently received 12 additional large works and await the arrival of a collection of some 60 smaller creations. We are proud to bring this tradition to the Boston area.
