| David Powers studied extensively in the areas of philosophy, Buddhist studies, sculpture, Chinese language, and bronze casting. His low-fire ceramics draw some of their inspiration from ancient Chinese bronze ritual forms. He perceives the construction of his forms to be an outgrowth of a process of meditation and visualization. His current works evoke both Asian and biomorphic resonance.
He says: "Creating these forms is, for me, a spiritual exercise. The exercise resides in a type of concentration not as refined as prayer or meditation, yet still much undiluted by the enumerable distractions of the practical business of living. The raw materials for the exercise are these: routine daily practice; simplification of focus; attention to the spontaneous creations of the mind; the development of an internal censor that filters out the idiosyncratic and superficial from the more fundamental and essential. Of course, you also need a little plaster and clay."
